MEMORIES
The life of a writer is blessed, though maybe not for the reasons you think. In my life, I wrote first to be understood, then to understand, and finally to accept all parts of myself as valid, worthy, and lovable. And yes, I initially felt a big part of that ‘worth’ needed at first to be proved; to the industry, to my family, and to myself. It turns out I was born worthy, and so in time the bigger fish, while still occasionally pursued, were sometimes just let out to sea as a way of saying, ‘Hey Laurie, it’s all good. You’re enough here, and I love you whether or not you are achieving things.’
There’s also a happy byproduct of being a writer, whatever your approach, and that is the people you meet along the way. At launches, festivals, and one-on-one, I have some met some incredibly kind, funny, and friendly fellow writers and industry professionals. With that in mind, I thought it worth framing some of the happier moments I’ve found in twenty years of following my heart, pursuing my craft, and connecting with those brave enough to put their own thoughts to the page, or to champion those who do.
Friends and fellow writers, if you have any photos of me (or us!) that you captured along the way, send them through, and I’ll put them up. Thanks for the memories and the friendship. Sometimes, it’s only once when look back on the road we’ve travelled that we realise just how lucky we have been.
