COLLABORATIONS

In 2019, Melbourne visual artist Lisa Sewards approached me about an exhibition she was planning where she would paint work based upon existing short stories. While I’d recently published my debut novel, You Belong Here, I liked the idea more interpreting what would in time become my short story collection, Greater City Shadows (then titled Nova.) Lisa produced an incredible exhibition, ‘Short Stories,’ that took place in March 2021 (photos here). I don’t have pictures of all the visual works that came out of her reading Greater City Shadows. Here are a select few, however, in what I hope is the first of many mixed-media collaborations still to come.

‘ Each work in Short Stories gathers the most impactful symbols, words, objects and themes from dozens of unique pieces of writing. Sewards has captured and visually recreated the emotional tonality of her source materials - of the short stories. Combined, these artworks encompass the viewer with surreal perspectives of worlds past, current and those which are forming.‘ - Loni Jeffs, Arts Writer and Editor.
